Born in poverty in the 1820s, he became a pioneer missionary among the cannibal tribes of the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu).
From personal tragedy, and in the face of great opposition, he saw incredible results in his work.
Such was his influence that he was invited to the White House by the American President of the day.
